One method I have always sworn by is not bleaching my whites. But rather, soak them in cold water and detergent, rinsed and hang them in the heat away from the sun.

The reason for not bleaching is because white is actually a color just like any other color and apparently has same number of tone variations like green. Pure cotton is actually a light dirty brown color.

And if you don’t hang the whites under the sun , the white colour will not be the yellowish white you see, but a clean pure white. My mother thinks I am crazy, but some friends of mine even go as far as drying their whites in the bathroom totally protected from the sun in order to keep it from turning yellow.
